Courmayeur Has Some of Europe’s Friendliest Hotels

Whether you’re a winter sports enthusiast, a mountain climber, or someone who’s simply captivated by spectacular Alpine vistas, you’ll love Courmayeur Italy.  This little ski resort village has them all.  It doesn’t stop there, though – there’s much, much more.

Tucked into the base of Mont Blanc on the mountain’s Italian side, Courmayeur appeals to travelers who want the best in skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, ice climbing and other winter sports.

Some people say you haven’t really lived until you’ve skied in the Mont Blanc region.  And, not that many resorts offer heli-skiing, but Courmayeur is one of them.

Heli-skiing might be one of the most exciting winter sports ever invented:  a helicopter drops you in the middle of nowhere; from there you need to find your way back to civilization.  Your skis are your only mode of transportation and your head is your only guide.  It’s not for someone who’s timid or out of condition, but it’s a truly exhilarating experience. And it’s something you can do only at Courmayeur and a few other places in the world.

Ice climbing is another one of the more unusual winter activities you can do while staying in Courmayeur.   Most people don’t how to ice climb, but instructors are ready to teach you.  The region has areas suitable for novice ice climbers as well as experts, so you’ll be thrilled whether you’re a beginner or highly skilled.

Dogsledding’s another option.  It’s something many people have always wanted to try but never had the opportunity.  Come to Courmayeur and one of the local dogsledding guides will teach you how to control a dog team and sled.  With a little practice you’ll be able to mush on your own.

But not everyone is into winter sports – and especially not some of the more extreme types like heli-skiing.  If you’d prefer sightseeing in the Alps, Courmayeur is the perfect place to do it.  The views of Mont Blanc (the highest peak in the Alps) are breathtaking from the village, but more than 14 mountains higher than 13,000 feet are within sight.  You’ll think you’ve stepped into a picture postcard when you’re looking out your hotel window.

Courmayeur might be a tiny little ski village (its full time population is under 3,000 people), but its location so close to the Mont Blanc ski resort makes it a perfect spot for a winter vacation.  There are plenty of Courmayeur hotels, from ultra-luxurious to budget-friendly.  Most of them are family-operated, with staff that goes out of their way to be friendly and accommodating.  The upshot is that the hotels in Courmayeur are known for being some of the friendliest in Europe.

The emphasis in this beautiful region is winter, but it’s actually a lovely place to visit during any time of the year.
